Link Terms Other Than 'Webring' - 06/27/2004
In a posting here
http://l.webring.com/forum?forum=manager;did=2345
WebRing.com wrote about the use of terms like "links" or "partners" or other terms other than "webring" as the text linking to webring control panels and navbar stacks.

The lack of an obvious link simply increases the chances we'll make a mistake.

The lack of an obvious link is also annoying because we feel the member shows little respect for the other members of the Ring(s) he/she is in ....

I'd be curious to hear from some webring members why they might NOT want to use the term "webring" as a major navigation link. That is, why might they prefer the terms "links" or "partners" or some other term.

(1) Artistic expression.

(2) They might want to put ALL outbound links (including webrings, banner exchanges, favourites, etc.) on a SINGLE page and feel that the word "webring" is too specific to cover the usage.

The ones I'm seeing have placed the web ring nav bar on the page they also use for Reciprocal links. These pages are often linked back to as 'partners', 'links', 'resources', 'friends' and 'more information'. Maybe some other wording too.

I seldom see a link back to this type of landing page with the wording 'webring' or 'ring' unless the site is only using rings. In other words, unaware of reciprocal linking.

I suspect this is a PASS-L issue; if a link other than 'webrings' is used, detection might be difficult.

Simply underscores the problems of allowing people to be half-hearted members (personally, I insist on full membership - and other than 'browser-altering', it's my only 'general' condition of membership
