Wow, I'm moving quickly through 'The seven stages of grief' - 10/05/2006
1. Shock or Disbelief - At first I thought there was no way they could possibly be serious.
2. Denial - If I just wait a while, certainly WebRing would reconsider and offer alternatives.
3. Bargaining - Well, if people overwhelmingly voiced their objections, and made cases as to why this was a bad idea...surely they would reconsider.
4. Guilt - How could I just walk away from the communities I have supported and grown all these years.
5. Anger - I am not walking away from my communities, I'm being shoved out the door. After all my years of hard work, I suddenly discover I'm disposable.
6. Depression - Just looking at my rings is depressing. I took a first cut and sent over half of my rings to adoption. It was like dropping a beloved pet at a shelter...sadly, these are the rings that are small and not very active. They are unlikely to be adopted for any good purpose.
7. Acceptance and Hope - WOW, I'm already at step 7! I find myself thinking about WebRing in the "past tense". Its a lot like looking back at an old job. Yes, I still manage my best rings till the 15th, then they will be taken away...but I'm ready to move on. In the unlikely event WebRing decides not to take them away...I may re-engage over time, but theres a lot of broken trust to get past. I will definitely tune in the week of the 15th to see what happens when all the people who really aren't paying close attention to the changes see their rings and memberships vanish. I'm sure the "WebRing" site will continue in some form or another, but it has almost nothing in common with the WebRing concept pioneered in 1994 by Sage Weil. Its not that I long for the "good old days", I just really thought WebRing had such great potential. I leave with the hope that WebRing finds its new breed of Ring Manager...cuz its gonna need a lot of them!
