No need to abandon any ID in the system.
I've had emails from members about the same problem that it sounds like you're having. Try following these steps (and don't alter them):
1. Log in to your account
2. Click on Account Info at the top of the screen
3a. Click the link to have the verification code emailed to you
3b. DON'T shut down your browser or log out of the system
4. When you get the code, copy and paste it into the right spot in Account Info
5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "I agree, change my info"
You should be able to click on Account Info again at the top of the screen and see that your email has indeed been verified.
Note 1: You only need to do this once for each ID you have, not for each ring.
Note 2: Don't try to just change the URL of the account info screen to match the User ID / server that you are trying to get the code for. It won't work. You need to log in to each specific ID from one of the login screens and click on Account Info. Any other shortcut will not work.
